Spin Cycle

Kudos to the PR team over at Zone Labs…they’ve managed to make enough of a splash with their “180solutions Withdraws Lawsuit Against Zone Labs” press release that folks are now calling us to figure out who’s telling the truth. We can’t blame the media and industry watchdogs for being confused on this one – Zone Labs’ press release specifically states that “No changes were made to ZoneAlarm’s software.”

Well, something must have changed. If you’ll recall our November 30 post titled “Scanning Apps Gone Wild: The Case Against ZoneAlarm,” several weeks after our lawsuit was filed, we pointed out that Zone Labs had changed its labeling from “Dangerous Behavior” to “Suspicious Behavior.” Gone was the initial claim that “180search Assistant is trying to monitor your mouse movements and keyboard strokes.” New – again, after the lawsuit was filed - was the assessment that our application “may try to track or log keystrokes (user input), mouse movements/clicks, web sites visited, and other user behaviors.”

Although we still obviously consider the new language to be overly aggressive, as we pointed out in our press release, we were able to pursue a business relationship due to the updated labeling and therefore dismissed the lawsuit.

As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words.

Something changed.
