Zango’s Cookie Jar
posted: 12:20 PM, Oct 08, 2006

Do you like cookies? Chocolate chip? Oatmeal raisin? How about “magic cookies?” Because we work with thousands of online advertisers, the question about the behavior of “cookies” often comes up. Far from the easy responses of they are best warm and with milk, computer “cookies” have different behaviors and purposes, and most of all, a massive lack of clarity in the minds of most online advertisers. We here at Zango wanted to take a few minutes to both describe and link to some cookie information, and explain some of the work done to better understand how “cookies” interact with our desktop advertising products.

Cookies are small text files that are stored on your computer. Web sites use the information within cookies to communicate with your Internet browser, allowing for customized Web site features and tracking user activity within a Web site. Visit the Wikipedia for additional information.

Zango's desktop advertising software does not interfere with the communication between a Web site and a user’s computer. Zango software is installed only with fully-disclosed, plain language notice and user consent, and always operates on the desktop in a manner that protects privacy – never collecting personally identifiable information. Zango does not read, alter, modify or delete Web site or cookie content. A 2005 technical audit by ImServices Group Ltd., a leading provider of independent consulting and verification services, examined the operation of Zango software and its distribution practices.  One of the key audit findings is that “Zango… do[es] not alter, manipulate, or delete third-party affiliate referral tracking information.”

Many Affiliate Programs utilize cookies to track referral traffic and the sales that result from that traffic. Those Affiliate Programs reward their Affiliates for traffic that results in a sale. Because of cookie technology's limitations (alternatives include session-based tracking, webform submits and others), Zango works directly with administrators of Affiliate Programs to ensure the proper tracking of sales for the program and its affiliates. Zango is in ongoing communication with the Affiliate Programs and their administrators and is committed to supporting clients in growing their online sales while maintaining the affiliate marketing model.

Zango may utilize third-party cookies to provide advertisers with feedback on their campaigns. Cookies can help an advertiser determine which promotion drives better sales results. By tracking the results of separate offers such as "Buy one, get one free" vs. "$10 off," an advertiser can tailor their online message to achieve optimal results.

Questions about Zango and cookies can be emailed to direct@zango.com.
